Found some awesome coon trails this weekend, but they are all within 200yds of houses. Have any of you had much luck just bedding a 1 1/2 on the trail with some stepping sticks? At least a dozen cowpath coon trails on a mile stretch of road, cant let 'em go untouched. grin

I don't think I would try a blind set in a trail that close to houses, no telling what else will walk the trail. I would try DPs off to the side.

yes works great, don't even have to bed it, just nessle it down in and put grass on top, with the stepping stick, fast and productive

huntaholic you are on the right track. Snaremen have to pass these up and they are easy pickins. I have not had luck with 1.5, but 1.75 work just fine. Coon just plow thru and don't pay much attention to step sticks. I just put on top of ground and put a few leaves or grass over it and go. Very quick and legal.

you can put two stiks in the ground that make an x about 5 in off the ground then put the trap like 3-4 in away from the x from the sticks and the coon will go over them they dont have time to go around them this and this set works very well

I use #11's and 1.5's in coon trails all the time. We can't use snares or bodygrippers on land here. Works great.

I drew a pic on paint of the cross stick set for you. The cross of the two sticks should be 4 inches off the ground, and the trap pan should be 5 inches back on either side of the X. I have never used this set, just saw it in the video Boars Gone Wild, im sure there are people who could give you more ideas on it.. but here you go.
Sorry, photobucket wont let me copy the image code, says theres an error., try this link..

There not that close to houses. Some are probably at the 200yd mark but I just wanna be sure, not worth the ticket.

If you get the homeowners permission,
you can set within the 200 yard limit........

I'd stick with dog proofs. You don't want to catch the farm dog or the farmers best mouser and have them see it.

Those locations are the reason I have all my Yancy's traps.

To me 200 yards in in they guys yard. I say DPs or live traps. Setting a foot hold that close to a house is asking for trouble. Is a 6 dollar coon worth the stink that could be raised. ROW trapping can be a bad thing if abused. Get permission and move away from the road and house.
