Hey everyone I'm thinking of going after coon and i was wondering what type of trap, set and bait I should use to get them little guys. Any help would be great!!! Thanks.

You trapping land or water? Makes a big difference on set choice and location.

I'm land trapping, I'm thinking I'm going to set the trap by a part of woods that kinda sticks out so the animal will go for the closest cover, and would potluck bait work, I don't have no fish.

Any more help at all???

Look for sign,tracks,droppings. A 1.5 coil and a dirt hole,bait with fish,jack mackerel works good and a good lure like Tim Cavens moonshine will catch them and any other critter. If you only want coon,set a grizz.

Sleepy Creek makes a darn good one and bridger,montana,and duke. Sleepy creek has a model special 1.5 design for coon that helps prevent chewing. If you set a 1.5 for coon,don,t let them stay in the trap any longer than necessary,they have a habit of chewing on their foot if left in te trap too long. Be happy to help any way I can.

It doesnt take large numbers of traps,just good locations. Find the sign,bed your traps solid,bait and lure. My first trap line consisted of 3 coil springs and 2 snares. Didnt catch a lot
of fur but I did catch fur. Coons as well as most other animals arent picky when it comes to food,about anything with a smell will attract them,peanute butter,bacon grease,marshmellows and fish will work for coon. BEAVER CASTER WILL CATCH ANYTHING WITH FUR. GURANTEED!!!

Well do I have to have coon tracks on the spot to set the trap there???

foxtrapper i wish you the best of luck as you venture into this world, this site is LOADED with information, if you go to the archives and just sift through the titles and read some every day you will learn so much, however if you are on land i would make a dirthole with fish for bait, bed a 1.5 in front of it and make sure the coon cant pull on any thing such as trees or brush (they are stronger than you think) to power his foot out of the trap. Almost every trapline supply company has 1.5 coils, sleepy creeks, bridger, and a minnesota brand(MB) 450 (same size as a 1.5) are some of the best, dukes are the cheapest and are fine for the price paid

once again to learn as much as possible read as much of the archives as possible, it is crammed with some of the most valuable info

dryland-dirthole with fish and a 1.5 is golden but dont limit yourself to this set; or a lil grizz for coon only

I use dps biated with trout. I set right next to trails.

use 1 1/2 in a dirt hole set use fish oil with vanila works great
