I am boiling some traps now, or at least trying to. I am using a turkey cooker and half a 55 gallon drum. It has been going since 7:30 am, and its now 3:00 and just starting to get a good simmer. I have my tools in there now, will swap them out and put in my traps but this is taking 4 ever.

I thought it would be cleaner, and less odors, but not sure its worth it now. I used to use wood and it got r done, and never seemed to bother the gear. I am not sure the odor from wood burning does enough harm to the gear hanging around to not still make it a great option for boiling traps.

The wood smoke doesn't hurt a thing. I use a half of a 55 also. Stoke it good and in an hour it's rolling. And its free!!!!

Either one is ok.

I use propane these days with a burner I built out of two gas hot water heaters welded inside of a tire rim. It'll boil 40-50 gallons of water near 'bout before you can turn around.

If you use a turkey burner, use a turkey pot. As you have found out your burner isn't up to the task.

Wood is ok. It's inexpensive, but you have to keep adding to it.
So it's about what suits you.

Adios,
45/70,
RKBA!

I used wood because it's what I had layin around and I didn't have to go fill a tank, I would think either would work fine!

What ever is there and the easiest to use.
In town it's better for me to use a turkey cooker.
I would rather use wood as that's more traditional, and I like to cook over the open fire and eat goodies while I'm doing traps.

tryed propane, took forever as you have stated. Switched back to wood and got the job done. Only thing about the wood is if the wind is blowing the wrong direction (the neighbor) does not care for it. But they understand and let me get it done.

Since I do not have any wood, I switched over to the turkey pot, I boiled in it last year and cleaned traps in it this year, took only a few minutes to get it boiling. I only have 2 dozen MB 550's so will not take me to long.

Next year will have wood on hand.

The wood sticks spacers under the drum is all the wood I use and they will burn.

Strange ,I use propane turkey cookers for boiling traps, waxing them, canning vegetables and fish, and meats.
I never had a problem with it heating up in 15 minutes or less.

i use white gas in a coleman stove. i only have a 5 gallon bucket. so it takes awhile to do 5 or 6 doz. only takes about ten minutes to get a rolling boil. also do my deer heads on this stove.

The reaon that propane never got it done is that your burner is too small for your water container. It isn't simply the fault of
propane. You have to match your container to the burner as noted in several above posts that folks have done well when using a turkey cooker, i.e. container and a burner sized correctly for it.
What's so hard to understand about that?

Good thing you read what I missed.
That 55 gal drum would take forever to get to a boil. With wood fire too,if it is too small.

Good reading 45/70

I am using HALF a 55 gallon drum, and obviously not filled to the top. I have it sitting on bricks with the drum just half an inch off the burner. I knew it would not do the job on a full drum, but would guess I am using 1/3 and with a piece of metal on the top though it could handle it, did not happen yesterday. I did use this last year with a couple changes, a little less water and it was summer. Was pretty cold yesterday and guessing 7-8 gallons more water.
When I switched to the pot that came with the burner, worked great only drawback was could only do 6 traps at a time.

I need a big burner. smile

For boiling trap I see no problem, I would use propane for waxing traps so the wood odor doesn't affect the wax. Steve

Try getting a 15 gal steel drum. The kind that hold grease.
Check with those quick lube shops.
The drum is usually lined with plastic container holding the grease.
They may have one laying around useing it for a trash can or waiting for someone to come get it.
Otherwise they junk them. Doesn't hurt to ask? May have to give them something if there is a deposit on the drum.
You could also ask at a repair shop that does lubes and oil changes.
