this is made to be just like the coons version of this post. that is a great post from which i learned alot from. so hopefully i will be able to learn alot more and hopefully it will help out us beginners. who knows even you experienced fox guys might learn something new. so post pictures of sets, how theyre made, all that kind of stuff. and another thing id like to see out of this post is more about location.
thanks

What species of fax are you targeting. For Reds, you need to look for sign in basically the same places you would look for coyotes. Crop edges, Points, field roads, outside corners of fields. intersections on roads, etc.

Look for prominent objects that fox will key in on as scent markers. I like to drag logs or large rocks on crop edges to make post sets on. Lots of eye appeal works to get them to investigate the object and your lures draw them in closer. I also like farm lane intersections as bic mentioned. Fox and coyote use the path of least resistance and will travel these lanes. Use the wind to your advantage.

Gray fox location would be in brushy, covered areas, they dont like the open fields as much as a red would, they are also the only canine that can climb trees

So fox will only stay in a hole for a couple days of the year?

Anybody else have any thoughts on this?

lenni, do you baseplate the 1.5s or bubble weld the jaws. i was planning on getting some for fox but there is the occasional yote around too.

My newest and best location that I have found is a High-tension line that runs through the farms I am on. It cuts through woods too. Runs North/South, and disappears past the horizon. Talk about a long running barrier for the k9's to travel!! I will hopefully posting both yote and grey fox pics come january.

Well my pre-baiting worked. I made some large style dirt holes in the summer with a slight step down in front of the hole. I baited them with woodchuck or tainted venison.

Here is a picture of one I baited with venison during the summer. I dropped in a little more venison this week and bedded a MB 550 in the step down.

Here is what was waiting for me this morning. 11.2 lbs
Notice he is wearing a MB-550

If using the Duke 1.5's for K9's I HIGHLY suggest changing the J-hooks to 6 gauge J hooks unless they've changed them in the last 2 or 3 years. I also put machine chain on mine with MB crunch proofs instead of their cheap swivels.

Here is a trailcam picture of a Red Fox working my first test set. He was well 'guided' and stepped where I hoped he would.

Used Cavens Bobcat Chunk Bait in the 45 degree hole and Graham's Deception Lure on a small branch three feet above the set.

yes, i HIGHLY believe it, in fact, i know it!other than birth, the only time they will use it is very bad/extreme weather conditions. or you can call our DNR office if ya wanna say somethin to that, cause i get my information from them, and they wouldnt be given false info.

I have heard of fox moving thier young from one den to another. Also it seems that the area may dictate the level of cover needed by a fox. In an area that is frequented by coyotes the fox probably is more inclined to hole up for cover.

About the dens I have been keeping a close eye on a den I found this summer that the fox were using a lot, and when trapping season rolled around and they were still using it. Set a trap there and a few days later had a nice red fox waiting for us.

Anyone have information on good cage trapping techniques for red fox? Will a standard 12x12x32 raccoon trap catch one? The only fox I've seen around here are in the city limits which limits me to cage trapping. A buddy of mine went out back of his house the other night and found two fox had knocked over his garbage can and going at some spoiled ribs he had thrown out. Usually has that problem with coons, but apparently fox like nasty ribs. I'm hoping to catch one of them this year and would love suggestions on trap placement, bait, lure etc..

Cameron2 does a lot of cage trapping for Grey's. Hit him up, he might give you some general guidance.

Well fella's, I'm finally getting the hang of this fox trapping, I think. Had a few sets they walked around on, and dug my dirthole open a little more for me, so I tightened up my guides a little and picked up my first gray of the year the other day. Had his girlfriend's toenail in the other set there, 1/2inch from getting a double! Then this morning, nailed a red in a dirthole that caught a housecat 2 days prior, and get this... Before I got there, that ol red got himself up in a well-tender's truck-bed and rode away!! (and I'm pretty sure he ain't a-comin' back!) How's that for Friday the 13th.
