Here's a picture tutorial for a flat set, caught 3 fox total here, on the remakes of the set.

Supplies you'll need are you digging and pounding tool. Staking sytstem and trap(I'm using duke #1.75), gland lure(I'm using dobbins Purrrfect), and fox urine and sifter. You will also need a backing of some sort. If you want to use gloves you can.

Next dig out your trap bed ONLY big enough for your trap, no bigger. Position your trap and bed it solid. Sift a ligh covering of dirt over it since this won't be your final covering

Now put your backing about 9 inches back, closer if you want but not a whole lot. Blend in your set with your surrounding vegatation, In this set I used grass. If I was in the woods I would have used the leaves lying around. Apply your gland to the top part closest to your trap. Squirt your urine on the side of the backing facing your trap.

Here is the finished set showing location as well.

And here's what it produced..

I think Minker is either referring to a KB 5.5, which has compound levers, or else an MB 550. I have never tried the 5.5, but I love my 550s and would recommend them to anyone.

I dont believe in gloves and yes that is me in the video.Where I trap is contaminated with so much human and steel scent,I really dont think it matters. Its a powerline where it seems the whole freakin community wants to throw their trash.

jersey gloves are scent free when clean, wash in baking soda...we talked about this on facebook, and im sure i trappedd more k9's then you, not to be competitive, but maybe scent has something to do with it..

Just my two cents' worth, K9. I made a dirthole last year, didn't use gloves, didn't use a kneeling pad, nothing. I really goofed off with that set, just trying to have fun. Stuck some fish down the hole, and put mink gland outside the hole. The set wasn't within 100 yards of permanent water. Had a gray fox the very next day.

I read about a fella peeing on his competition's set, only to find the same thing: A gray fox in it the very next day.

I'm not saying you're wrong, just saying, there are different ways of doing things, and they all work to some extent.

I know of people who have used gloves and who dont i think it truly depends on population. and just how picky the animal wants to be. I have also reset with the same so called dirty trap and cought two more reds on the same trap.

I've seen many Mark June demos, K9, and he never has said at any of them that scent is important. He says that the main thing is LOCATION.

I thought gloves were to both hide human oder and keep human oder of traps to keep animals from diiging up traps?

Correct...the K9's know you have been there,as a matter of fact almost every animal that happens to walk by the set with the exception of maybe the wild tukey knows you've been there.Gloves may help some but they cannot keep the human scent from getting on the set.Just breathing releases scent molecules, the human body is constantly sluffing off dead skin cells which indeed have an odor.

I try to get in and get out,if I happen to wear gloves they're to keep my hands warm or somewhat clean. The key is to not give the animal a reason to dig or become alarmed. They smell humans everyday.Don't make your set right after washing your hands with some kind of smelly soap or hand sanitizer.

As far as smelling the steel of the trap, they can smell it.They smell metal all the time,it's nothing new to them.Barbed wire, nails, nuts and bolts that have fallen off of machinery.Again don't have anything on the trap that cause a digging response.

Just make your sets on location with a well bedded trap and you will do fine.
