What is your opinion on the #14 Victor jump as a wolf trap?

I have both MB750's and #14 VJ's, but I was not planning on using the #14's for wolf, just for beaver.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave, Im not White 17 but I don't feel the 14 jump would be a good wolf trap. they are just a bit too small

The 14 will hold a wolf IF the jaws are OK. Since they have cast jaws and have not been manufactured for a long while, every one of them is suspect. Unless you can get them "x-rayed" to determine if there are cracks in them, I would not use the 14 V's.

I bought up a dozen of them at a garage sale here in Fairbanks one time. Cleaned them up and set them out. Out of the 3 that ended up with wolf feet in them, 2 had jaws that broke. Only 1 held the wolf (and I was amazed that it did; jaws were bent quite a bit.) I quickly scooped up the rest and retired them.

PS: (Thankfully) I am not W17 either....

Pete

In my opinion the #14 jump is a great beaver trap. It is by no stretch of the imagination a wolf trap. I had three at one time and wolverines completely destroyed all them. A wolf would do the same I'm sure

Yes, I've used the bridger #5 long springs. They are garbage for wolves. The springs just aren't strong enough.

Has anyone tried the sleepy creek #5 trap yet? Looks to be well built. It costs as much as a #9 though. How strong are the springs on it?

White, those traps aren't waxed or dyed? Do you endorse waxing....traps, of course!

He's "cooking" traps today, but am sure he is waxing.
About what, I don't know.

Knowing W17 as I do, I would guess he is probably waxing eloquent.

Is the sleepy creek 4 1/2 any good for wolves, with or without some mods, anyone tried them on wolves?

I just got a bridgers # 4 L.S. and just read the post that the springs are not strong enough to hold a wolf. Will they hold a beaver?

thanks

I'm sure countless beaver have met their end with a foot stuck in a #4 L.S. If the springs are still good you should be fine.

How much does a 114 in good condition set you back?
