i suppose at a farm and fleet store HAVAHART TRAPS... but if your looking for traps that you can have around for quite a long time i would suggest Tomahawk traps, hill top cages, safegaurd traps williams cages traps.... Wildlife Control Supplies carries these i think

Havahart is the only brand of double-door I found on WCS.

Yeah, I too buy for the long haul. I was just caught off guard on the price. I will wait then til money ain't so tight and just buy a couple single door traps. Thanks you all. In my humble opinion- an excellent decision! Although I have more than a dozen various size double door traps; I can count, on one hand, the number of times they have been used over the past 20+ years. Most were purchased when I was young(er), dumb and full of ignorance. As soon as I “discovered” single door traps the double doors were retired. There may be a rational use for double door traps, for some situations, in some areas of the country. I haven’t found it for the critters around here though. But I have them if I ever need them.

This post came along at the right time. We just added our seventh double door Havahart. (And they're not too bad for a Havahart) I don't think we bought any of them. They were either given to us or we were talked into taking something off the bill for them. This one was never used and my son took $20 off the bill for it. They're a little bulky and you need to keep them tuned properly. but if you put a 2-door next to a closed end, the 2-door will usually strike first. I kind of agree with Mr Fry most of the time. Here's where we use double doors. (all the rest are Tomahawks) 1. Double door squirrel traps for those trap-shy females. 2. Double door skunk traps for those trap shy females. 3. Double door woodchuck with a nose cone over the hole, so you can catch them coming and going. 4. Same as woodchuck for Raccoons.

Havahearts quality has come down a long way the past few years. If you buy a havaheart buy one from a garage sale that is the old style. The old ones have a wide galvinized spring attached to the door and the door lock bar. It looks like the same material the treddle and door are made of. The new ones have week little springs. The lock bar is also made of thinner material. There is also a lot of play in the door. With the door in the closed and locked position you can nearly raise the door an inch on some of them. If I can't find old ones I will be replacing with Tomahawks or Williams.

You are right Animals Only. We will actually pay more for the old style than the more expensive new ones. When I talk about old style I mean the ones with the wire door instead of the solid door. I just got one the looked brand new, last month. I don't think they've been made for 15 years.

On this note and not to divert away too far from the original post, if so, I do apologize. Do any of you make/weld your own cage traps instead of buying them?
I did quite a few back when I was in college after taking a welding course, and cranked out around 30 traps, that were 12"x12"x36" with 1/2" welded wire all made out of 1/4" pencil rod. Wire was put on with hog rings and J-clips. Materials ran me around $10ea and time was close to 3 traps/hour. Just a thought.

Boy, I wish I could weld; can't solder worth a dip either. When you're not very handy, you have to choose your son-in-laws very carefully.

CHRIS L2, Do you have any pictures or directions for the traps you built. Please post and send to jstropea@yahoo.com if you don't mind. I would like to make a few. Thanks! TROP

if you put a 2-door next to a closed end, the 2-door will usually strike first. This does not indicate the single door traps are more likely to cause refusal..... it is a result of simple mathematics. It's very similar to why a cage trap should always be placed along a wall or edge of some type.... it reduces the chance of the animal messing with the bait from the side (and possibly setting the trap off before entering) when it approaches the trap. Therefore, it has been proven that cage traps are far more effective when placed longways along an edge because the animal is more likely to discover the entry when one long side is "not available". In other words.... out of 3 sides, one out of 3 is open instead of one out of 4. Better odds. Next basic math principle: A 2-door trap has TWICE AS MANY entries for the animal, thereby increasing the chance an animal will be captured in that trap if placed next to a single door trap. The measured result is always going to favor the 2-door trap in that scenario. However, if the only trap there is a single door model, the animal will then be captured in the single door trap, as EVERY DOOR (yep, just one) leads into the single door trap. Isn't math fun? Percentages and "chance" ratios are fairly consistent when the number of openings is a fixed number. I would ask my algebra teacher for more specific data.... but he's dead.
