The trapping seasons are fast approaching, good luck to each and everyone of you.
1.Enjoy each and every minute you are able to spend in the field.
2.Be SAFE--dress properly, this includes proper footwear and hand protection.Be sure when the weather turns bad you also have a good hat.More heat is lost through the top of your head, than anywhere else.Warm and dry hands ,feet and head, will make the trapline so much more pleasurable.
Be sure to wear a life vest when on or in the water .
Not only will it help keep you warm, if you take a spill it can save your life.
3.Read all your trapping laws before you head out into the field. If you have any questions, contact your local conservation officer. Make sure you understand your regulations, and be sure to follow them to the letter.
4.Respect the animals you are going to catch.Check all traps on a timely basis.Stake your traps properly(always stake for the largest animal you may catch).
Dispatch any live animals immediately.
Take proper care of the animal after you harvest it.(Skin or freeze the animal,or sell on the carcass),but again do it in a timely fashion.Don't put off till tomorrow, what needs to be done today.
5.Use extreme caution when approaching trapped animals.Any animal from a Muskrat to a coyote ,will bite--and they are a lot quicker than you think.A bite or a scratch could easily end your season or worse. If you are bitten or scratched-- seek medical attention right away.(if bitten--do not shoot the animal in the head)a rabies test cannot be done on an animal if its brain has been destroyed.
6.When skinning and putting up your fur--wear latex gloves(or if you are allergic to latex, vinyl gloves). An apron is also a good idea. The wearing of protective gloves ,helps keep you from contacting any diseases your catch may carry.
7.Share your experiences with others.Take mom, dad, a sister or brother along.Your friends may also appreciate the chance to go with you.
8.Keep your eyes and ears open--learn all you can.
And above all else--ENJOY.

Tom
