It may seem a bit unprofessional to use but what are everyone's feelings on dry dog food as bait for coons, skunks, and opposums?

I went from using commercial baits and lures to plain old dry dog food and my catch rate has gone WAY up. If the animal is still in the yard, I have been getting them on dry dog food. No cats either.

City coons are raised on dog food, and that's how they become a problem.

If you're going to use dog food it's more impressive if you carry it in a container marked in bold letters that says EXTRA SUPER DUPER WORLD CLASS SPECIAL SECRET FORMULA RACCOON LURE.

Got 22 raccoons on a property in Aug that got tired of feeding the raccoon problem of 3 they started feeding 2 years prior with their own dog food and some anise lure.

In my case they were already used to eating it and was easy to just only put in the cages and no longer on the ground as they were doing before me. So yeah it works.

Never anything wrong with using what the coons are using. I've had more than a few jobs where the customer reported coons raiding the garbage can so I just reached in the can and grabbed whatever and tossed it in the back of the cage.

Chicken Soup for the Dogs Saul ( puppy formula.....great stuff) or Alley Cat..

Dog food will work in the wild if.....
1. the mice do not get it First
2. you set were the coons "are".......Not a lot of "Carrying Power" without some type of lure.....(IMHO...lol)

The only time dry dog food didn't work for me is when they didn't know it was there.

I knew they didn't visit the cage because we had snow that week- no tracks. (I don't think dry dog food has much of a smell in the dead of winter.) The yard was fully enclosed with wooden fencing, and the coons used the fence tops as traveling highways.

I tried this:

1-Loud salmon-based Lenon's raccoon super call lure to get them to walk on the fence in my trap area.

2-White egg for eye appeal to get them to climb down and actually investigate. (One freebie egg outside trap.)

3-Dry dog food in dixie cups in the cages.

The next day I had a raccoon double. smile
