I luckily took the springs off before I welded those vice grips on. I haven't had any trouble with the gambel at all...however, I build another style that I've been using for coon. I'm sure you've seen them...they have a V cut in the steel which is bent roughly at a 45 degree angle. I still use the chain gambrel for K-9's and deer though.

That is a heck of a good deal on the tubing. Glad I could help with the rebar. Let me know how the gambrel works if you try it on some tough old coons or cold coyotes. I'm anxious to know if it can handle the stress. wink

I skinned quite a few cold coyotes and three deer last year on it ADC...no problems from it yet. I should just build a wider version of the other gambrel I mentioned...just haven't yet. It's a lot quicker to use.

Wow, that's great. They don't look that tough.

Good luck trapping this year Billy!

looks good. I've got a question for you. How far apart are your vise grips? I'm getting ready to build a rig of my own for coon and possum and haven't decided how far apart to put my vise grips.

Check the archives, it's probably there!

The vice grips are 16 inches apart. I originally made them 18 inches, but it was tough to skin a smaller coon with it, so I moved them together a bit.

I put the vice grips 14" apart on mine. I don't think it need to be exact, there more than one way to skin... well, everything. laugh LOL!
