I am assuming that they are gray squirrels. Probably a female and her last litter of young. If the young are old enough to leave the nest, I usually find it much more efficient to trap them at their entrance into a home rather than try to drive them out. Until the entrance is found and sealed; more squirrels will return.

.....man, ain't that the truth!!! I had a customer do just that.
He asked, "What should I do?" I told him the first thing to do was open the hole back up.... and do it quick! Because the squirrel had done about $500. worth of trim damage! smile

Ron says it all. After or during trapping I either put cardboard over the entry on a coni. After a few days of no one coming or going repair the entry being sure to block air currents with caulk or foam. sometimes after catching the mother it takes a couple of days for the young to start coming out. Once they start it goes quickly.

thinking outside of the box with cardboard on a conibear.... i would think the cardboard covers the hole, while being attatched to the trap wires and when the squirrel pushes to get through, kablam!!! got em! am i close?

More like a cardboard trigger pan.

Bend the trigger wires @ 90 deg and impale a piece of cardboard or hardware cloth on it to make a pan. Start at the center so it's like a see-saw, and it will work both going and coming.

Sorry, no way to take or post pic's.

The trap must be set with the trigger on the bottom, not the top as normal.

Bend the trigger wires @ 90 deg, so they will be horizontal to the ground.

Impale, glue or staple the pan to the wire so that the pan center is over the wire frame. This will make it work both ways, like a see-saw.

Works well as a trail set, or along a wall/log etc too.

Hope this helps. big bob

i could see all the bunny huggers crying because i used a conibear on a squirrel =) why not just put a multicatch with a passive up? less trips and more humane...

Actually, the petaphiles have less a problem with the bodygrip traps than with footholds. They apparantly would rather see an animal dead than to release unharmed a nontarget catch.
Also what will you do with them. A lot of states have reg's prohibiting live release, because you will mess with the biodiversity, and dump animals in a place that they have no knowledge of, possibly introducing new diseases the locals have no immunity for.

we dont use either. im talking live cages. thats what customers want. and we can legally turn squirrels loose outside of the county of capture with permission or at a park. we take out about 10-50 squirrels a day. i realized a long time ago with this kind of work though that what works for you might not work for me and the other way around. there are alot of ways to do this job.

Trappa charlie, so you catch between 4000 and 20,000 squirrels a year? That's a lot of squirrels! That's between $280,000 and $1,400,000 for service calls and squirrels.

we call our transfer trap the squirrel carrier. it has a internal one way door and we just condense all our live cages into it. i wonder how many animals i do get a year. i should start keeping track. sometimes i come back to the office with 2 or 3 and sometimes 20 or 30 depending on the time of year and weather. does anyone keep track of their annual catch totals? id be interested to know what other large scale guys are bringing in

in certain areas of town. the technician in downtown Columbus has his biggest pay checks of the year from November through February. most of my squirrel work starts in september and ends early december. alot of it has to do with the type of houses and the lack of trees in yards in some areas. you know how that goes. and i dont know about you guys but i am ready for a break. im tired. its been a long year

out here in my area we will be doing squirrels from Sept till July. alot of guys out here use one way doors and the squirrel simply chews a hole right next to the door or relocate squirrels from cages to a area that the squirrel can get back into a house. Many times the squirrels we deal with are trap smart or shy.
Wish I could use killers but we can't many time in my area the squirrel will not enter from the out side into a multi but chew another hole. but most will enter the multi from inside. about 5 percent will go into the home by way of basement chase ways or chew through a wall. I make sure before I use them what type of squirrel(female) I am dealing with if I can. I hate it when they end up in the house. some times I use a cone to let them in the house and the multi for the out or set up 2 or 3 reg cages from a box to give them the allusion that it is wide open.
like stated before every body is different.

Hey Jonesie, just the guy I need. We got a call this morning asking if we use the "new, special bait" that the squirrels eat and then get real thirsty and go outside for water and die.

Fortunately we were able to talk her into using us, even though we didn't have any "eat, drink, die" bait.

My question is; What kind of Snake Oil are the shysters trying to sell now?

Diphacinone and cloraphacinone LOL I can't believe that people still believe that. I am seeing it used with flyers when the tech thinks the person has a major mouse problem.

It is sad but a few years ago I was giving a talk a guy really thought that it was the water that killed the mouse/ squirrel and that the only water that they would be able to drink was outside. I said it is a anticoagulant. he said yeah the water expands and blows up their gut they can't make it back into the house.

I will say that a squirrel seems to rot down faster that way LOl
