I found that canned cherries(cherry pie filling) mixed with sweetened condensed milk. is a killer for skunks even with another food source. caught 17 in a 7 day span.

Who said skunks are the second easiest animal to catch? Probably a guy who caught some by mistake. All of the squirrel family is easier as are raccoons, turtles, pigeons, etc.

How big a trap are you using. I've had refusals from big skunks on small traps, replaced with a larger trap and bingo...

Cheese or buttered popcorn puffs. Place a couple in front of the trap..... one inside the entry, and a few behind the pan. I use the 6-inch PVC skunk traps almost exclusively, and never have a problem with refusals, even on large males. Seems everyone has different experiences. Interesting. Great thing about the puffs.... you can eat some on the way to the job.

Most skunks are not bad to remove. However, I have seen a few that would make a "nipped" coyote look easy. Those doing the same thing, hanging around but refusing to enter a trap. Of any size, shape, or style.

I have used blind sets to get these...when possible. Another way I have used is to use a tail, or part of tail, from another skunk inside a pipe trap. Seeing at least part of another skunk seems to be more then they can stand. The same would work with cage traps, as long as they are covered well.

Jamesons Peaches and Cream. Best I've used for skunks. Almost good enough to taste myself.

UncleMike....hope you didn't think I was being a wise guy....
My point was that if a skunk walks past your trap,( and you know it for a fact) switch the bait and/or lure next day, period!

Listen,in this business, we get payed to catch an animal...not "try to!" If something isn't working...change it!
Idle traps do not make you money and cost you your integrity...nothing's worth that!

I make lure...if it isn't working, I use Jameson's or whom ever's...whatever it takes! Trailing scent, mini marshmallows, lure, bait, camaflauge, "trap wings", etc. Change it as needed. Skunks can be fussy at times, especially during grubbing season.

An animal should only have two choices, leave or be caught...NO EXCEPTIONS, EVER!!! wink

Bigger traps (unless you're already using a big one), different baits. Use multiple traps in case you get a cat in one, and a different bait in each trap. But don't mix baits in a single trap. Try catfood and sweet commercial baits like tuti fruit (my personal favorite). I always go with catfood where possible for the quickest catch. Only problem with that is the potential for cats and flies in the summer. Also try covering the sides of the trap with a tarp. In my opinion, skunk lure isn't needed. They just want an easy meal of something that smells good.

Use some sort of "drift fencing" to guide the skunk......

I had a similar situation a couple years ago.... skunks are ALWAYS a problem at bird feeders. There was only 2 feeders at the site, so I placed plywood sheets under the feeders at dusk to cover the "spillage" which the skunks were feasting on. Placed my traps on the plywood directly under the feeders.... caught the skunks in 2 nights. Standard procedure when trapping rodents (mice/rats, etc) is to always remove the food supply before setting traps. Works the same on most problem critters, but sometimes it is hard or impossible to eliminate the food source.

ahhhhhhhhh....bird feeders....lol.....Ron just exposed a "most often" overlooked trick....

If there is a Large area or more then one bird feeder you can cover the area with painters tarps......and put a smaller piece of plywood under the traps itself...

sometime offering a bait with moisture will add to the catch ratio??????????
