This year seems to be just a bad year of trapping, only caught three coins so far, been catching things I end up letting go. Seems like nothing is around, did set myself a goal this year. Hoping things will get better. I do mainly live traps when it comes to trapping.

Goal:
10/10 coon
0/1 mink
0/1 Fox
0/1 coyote
0/1 bobcat
2/0 skunks (let one go)
Too many possums

Do you all think a #2 Bridger Coil Spring Trap too big for water sets for coon, anyone's opinion, if so what would you recommend? Figure I'd ask thanks. Also I should have asked what you all would do stake them down, because my creek is nothing but rock bottom which makes it hard to stake the traps down. Thanks

23lb. coon caught in a cage. Got a call from a guy while checking traps tonight and said he had one if I wanted it. I drove over a little bit later and dispatched it. I had asked him earlier in the season if i could trap but I couldn't guarantee I wouldn't catch one of cats so he turned me down but said he'd call if he caught one. Pretty nice of him.

I've snared a lot of coon and I'd guess 10-20% end up having a rub from the snare/stake that is the size of a quarter or more. I blame it mostly on using snare stakes with the wire welded on which gets wrapped up in the snare.

I know a good loaded snare, producing head catches is the ideal way of snaring coon. What are some snare setups that reduce damage?

Lt,
I go to most of the OSTA conventions, banquets and all the NTA nationals. Plus, I used to go to most of the fur auctions.

And Live2hunt, how do those fare with last years prices.
It seems lower.
You both are talking about some fairly nice raccoon.
Here since mid January, when we had a warming spell, I saw a good many raccoon killed along the highway.
Usually they are picked up, even though it is against the law in the state of Ohio.
Not one 'coon I saw was ever picked up...that tells me something !

Still looking to hear how other trappers across the country did.
The catch had to be down this year.

I sold a hand full of 30 pounders two weeks ago and I got $12 for them green. I will be selling a few more next week that I snared in January. We will see how they go.

I only caught 15 coons this year not even targeting them . I released 4 small/ medium ones . Well the night before last some one brought me a live raccoon in a live trap and left it by my shed. This was the biggest coon I have seen all year,Well with coon season over on the 16th I watched him run across the field. I try to cath him next season .

IMO, while there are some traps that are better suited for trapping coons than a bridger #2, I would still set it if I needed to, and I do. Especially if it's 2 coiled. Probably a good idea to put it on a drowner if you're worried about them chewing out.

You can put your trap on a heavy drag like a RR tieplate, or you can set up a drowner rig that uses some sort weight on the deep end, like metal or a sack of rocks, or some rocks wrapped up in wire.
