what was the wax that goes on wood strechers? basswood is best, but where do you get it without breaking the bank? what other types of wood works? some people say pine can leave pitch marks on the fur, is that just from knots? could you just take a hole saw and pop the knot right out of the picture?

Most North Central MN small saw mills that saw native wood will have basswood. One should only have to pay .75 cents to $1 a board foot for decent Basswood. Maybe even less !

Not a very desirable wood so once the top grade boards are taken they are left with a very limited market on the rest.

No reason to wax a stretcher as it will soon soak up some grease from pelts.

Chuck could hook you up with Basswood I am sure as it is very common here at the Lake.

A board foot is 12" by 12" and 1" thick.

or 6" wide and 2 foot long or 3" wide and 4' long.

Basswood is far superior to Pine as it is far softer and easier to push pins into.

I use Johnson's paste wax on my wood and wire stretchers. Just a little. I also finish my wood stretchers. I just got tired of having to re-sand those stretchers ever 3 to 5 years. I'm down here in New Mexico and bass wood is no longer cheap here so I use pine or fur but try to rip the wood with out knots. I've never had any trouble with pitch but as I said before I finish
my wood stretchers and then add just a little floor wax to keep the flesh side from sticking to the wood or wire.
