When you trap coyotes gang setting traps can be very productive, since they travel in packs.

Everything you want to know you will find in the archives. All you have to do is read, but the only way to get good is to get out there and trap.

My first year I didn't get very much at all. The second year i caught quite a bit more. My third year I caught 3 times the amount I did then in my second year.

The reason for that was because I had a ton of traps, I found a lot more land to trap on, and my field knowledge greatly increased over the past 2 years. My sets looked better and I took less time at sets, I knew how to read sign, and i could pick out locations way better.

So the best way to learn is to trap. It will take a while to get good. And the best way to learn how to skin, flesh, and board animals is to go to a convention and watch the nafa guys do it or get to know some good trappers and ask if you can watch them do it. Oh and you could ask to go on their line with them, youll learn a ton, a lot more than reading about stuff.

And learn how to spell...honor student...ok then lol

For mink the pocket set with some fish in the back of the hole will work.

It will also work for coon.

For muskrats look for their runs or dens in the water. Set a 110 in the trail or infront of the den. Also the float set can be used.

Also the bottom edge set works for mink. For this you set up along the side of a bridge or culvert with a 110. I myself have not used it but plan to this year.

jtrapheadjr, where are you in ny? all i can say is find sign and set on sign, the best lure is sign. use blind sets ( sets with no lure) where you can find sign, and occasionally some lure along the edges of trails. gang set. set multiple traps in one location to catch more. for a beginner, as this is only my second year, try to make quality sets, not quantity. for muskrats, just find their trails and set a 110 in it, if you want to, you can put a piece of an apple or carrot on the trigger, but if your in the trail this may only shy them, and the occasional mink away. in ny, you cant use any trap designed to take more than one animal, which rules out the sometimes very handy colony trap for rats. you also have to stay i think five feet away from dens with traps, but im not exactly sure, because usually i find the den and trail and follow it about 15 feet away from the den and set a 110 in the trail. hope this helps

THF was 100% correct. For coon you can use the the box set with a 160 inside of it. My first year which was last year consisted of lots of these cubby sets. And they work reall well.

for coyotes and fox...remember...LOCATION IS KEY! set on sign...the poop wasnt dropped from a airplane! lol...where there is sign, there is an animal...i have had a dirthole set on a trail for 2 weeks till i connected with a female yote, but it was a yote...if you set somewhere and and you dont think you will get action, wait a week, freshen up your set every 4 to 5 days, and keep as much human set out! i kneel on a garbage bag, it works for me!! where clen cooton jersey gloves, when a pair gets to dirty, or stinks..THROW IT AWAY! they are like 40 cents a pair...use the right size and right kind of trap...a good sice for both fox and yote are the...1.65, 1.75, and #2!! dbls are just harder to bed, so i use mostly coilspring....take your time to make a set good, but dont spend more than 5 mins making a set, the longer your there, the more scent!! if you want more info our help...just say the word! lol....Austin

Dont be surprised if you catch a fox in your water sets. I never had this happen but I have heard and seen this before.

youve seen it? from what i have experienced...fox are like a cat..they are actually more cat than coyotes or dogs...i havent really seen any caught in a water set(maybe on the edge of a creek of the bank, near the water) but nothing like a coon, mink, beaver, otter or muskrat

Along the creek banks is a pretty good spot for them I hear.

i've been traping rabbits and groundhogs in a live catch trap in my yard all this summer so that is probably good practice for when trapping season comes.

Ive been shooting ground hogs. not a lot of help in trapping but good for hunting season.

Ive been trapping mice all this season for bait.

You can start by trapping mice/chipmunks with rat traps and weasel boxes. Not nearly as fun but still gets me excited to see a mouse in my trap.

With fox and yotes make sure everything is descented My first year we had traps dug up and tipped over all of this was because we knew nothing about scent. Also make sure that traps are bedded properly.

How do you use mice for bait?

You can either grind them up to make a paste sort of bait, or you can keep them hole and put them by your flat sets or in the hole of your dirt holes. Works for all K9s.

Me I keep them in the freezer. Just not in your moms freezer. I tried that ONECE. Thought I was going to get kicked out of the house. You should have seen the look on her face when she discovered those mice! Lol!

2 cups of salt per one gallon of bait...let your bait get to the right "stink" and then you preserve it in salt, grinding into a paste works well...

Salt? Sodium Benzoate seems to work best for preserving bait as I have heard that salt can have a bit of odor for the animals. It probably isnt a big different anyhow.

Another tip: A 1.75 Victor offset jaw is a great coyote/fox trap which usually hold coons,grinners, and stinkers.

yes salt..IMO there is no difference between the 2...and why wouldnt sodium benzoate give a smell? lol..what did pioneers cure there meat with that would last for weeks and weeks? salt! lol..

and yes...a 1.75 vic is a good trap...if you wanna do some work to them, if you want a trap thats good "out of the box", a sleppy creek 1.75 is a SUPER trap, as all traps, you need to clean off the factory grease..a reg.. or offset jaw is you preference, IMO, i like the offset, just from myy experience, i saw less foot damage.

Yup a 1.75 Victor offset is great out of the box besides taking factory oil off is all you really have to do. Dipping/dyeing helps them last longer though.

The number 2 victor offset is an ok fox trap. The best coyote and fox trap is the MB 550 I hear. We got a dozen. Havent used them yet, just bought them.

MB 550s are kind of expensive and I wouldnt recomend spending a lot of money for a beginer. Not saying your not good or anything like that but I wouldnt buy some exspensive equipment if you are just starting. Start small and grow into it. I am talking from experiance here.

now..your best bet is a bridger #2! buy a offset bridger #2, and cut the square link off that connects chain to trap and just side swivel it! great stock like that! or you can beef it up..(which i do) and fully modify it.
