I think a wire brush and then squirt some oil on it and get to sharpening.

Soak a while in muriatic acid, rinse, then a trip through the dishwasher.

I boil mine...not long...but the oil will come out and take the tiny shavings with it...have had a few for years and do it to them a few times every year.

place it on it's edge on a couple large nails in a throw away baking pan and put it on your oven on lowest setting or 150F if gas or propane oven until the oil stops running out. the metal shavings will come off much easier.

Won't a magnet lift the metal out of the stone?

I have nothing clever to put here.

We used to Fry them in the restaurant. We would wait until the fry oil had started to break down, and when we would heat the oil up to drain and clean the fryer, we would drop the stone into it for a few min. The oil would boil out the metal shavings, and prep the stone at the same time. And then we would empty the fryer of the old grease, Boil it out with a cleaner and water, Drain, rinse, and refill with new oil.

I have also boiled them out with water and a bit of dish soap.
a Word of caution. BE VERY careful when handling a Hot stone. They will be VERY brittle so if you bump it or drop it, it will probably shatter. LOL>
Same Idea with the dishwasher. which will also work.

I use comet powder cleanser to clean my sharpening stix. I would figure it would do a fine job on wet stone also.

See, I don't ever put water on mine. It's not a wetstone, mine's a whetstone, maybe the same thing? I only use oil. when it gets dirty we use kerosene.

You can use vegetable oil, but it tends to get sticky after awhile and it will coat the stone, and then you have to clean it again. LOL>
WD-40 or 3 in 1, or they actually make a sharpening grade oil as well.

Plain soap and water, use a good grade of light viscosity oil (3in1 etc) while using the WHETstone.

There is a produict called a Rust Eraser which I first noticed being sold in companies selling gunsmithing tools. Then some of the makers of different brands of ceramic "steels" started selling the Rust Erasers for cleaning the crock sticks, etc. And then some of us tried them with stones. Used with some hot soap & water, they'll do an OK job on the stones. Haven't tried them on any of the diamond products.
