hello to all. i tried searching and couldl not find the answer i wanted so here goes.

my dad has a pond on his farm and has an increasing muskrat population. my question is what size of coil spring or long spring traps should i use for musk rats? meaning, is there some where i could get a description of what trap size is good for what animal? i know this is a very general post with a small amount of info, but i'm just starting out. all info is welcomed and appriciated. thanks in advance

#1's will work for muskrats.

#1 longspring or coilsprings work really good for muskrats

Welcome! Anything from #1 to 1 1/2 work great. Check out the post just down from this one, "Muskrat tips" some good info in there,check the archives as well tons of info & trappers ready to help.

You might want to look in to colony traps also.

i have seen the reference to colony traps on here before but are un sure of what they are. sorry for alll the dumb questions. thanks for your patience.

also, is there any "required reading" for the new trapper? not just on muskrat, but also for cyote, bobcat, and fox?

1 1/2. Never know when you may get a coon coming by.

you also might want to try some 110 conibears in den entrances

after looking at them i thought about the conibears my self. are conibears and body grips the same thing?

where could i find Actors book?

They are the same type trap. If memory serves...Frank Conibear was the first one to come out with a mass marketed design for a bodygrip trap and so the name stuck kinda like we call "facial tissue" a "Kleenex" or a "photostatic copying machine" a "Xerox" :>)

Actually "Conibear" is a trademark of the Victor Trap Company's bodygrip trap. Only Victor's are marketed as "Conibear" traps. All others are bodygrippers. No big deal, I've always used the terms interchangably, but on another website you will immediately have at least two moderators jumping all over you if you ask "which brand conibear is best".

Anyhow, 1's or 1 1/2's, long or coilspring, and 110-size BODYGRIP traps will all work well for you.

I only use #1's and 110's for muskrat and they work great.
