On one of those late night "bat in the house" calls, I actually used the homeowner's cat for an "assistant". They said they watched the bat fly down into the basement area, and closed the door behind it. When I arrived about 30 minutes later, they told me how their cat was going crazy, and that is how they were alerted to the bat inside.

The basement was not "finished", as it had concrete floors but very rough block walls and the "ceiling" was open floor joists. Poor lighting didn't make things any better, so I asked if I could take the cat down there. No problem.

The cat walked about halfway through the basement and stopped. It sat on the floor and just stared in a fixed manner at a location up on one of the floor joists. I shined my light up there, and the bat was hanging at that spot. Very cool.

Ron ,

I have sort of used the home owner's cat as a ' pointer ' to help me find the bat . The cat will sit staring at the last place the bat landed.

If I am unable to find the bat , I tell the homeowner to keep the cat in the bedroom that they are sleeping in for the night. If the bat reappears during the night , the cat will wake up to the sound of the bat flying in the room and hopefully the noise the cat makes will wake up the homeowner.
