And so do I! He has about a 3/4 acre pond next to the Milwaukee river. Besides the fish already in it, he added 100 5 to 7 inch hybrids about five weeks ago.
All the fish have disappeared. No tracks and no droppings. Water is too deep in the middle for wading birds. What should I be looking for? Would an otter be able to clean out a pond this size? How about mink? Aliens from outer space?

Did the river come up and flood the pond and let them escape, or does he have an out of work neighbor?

At 3-5 pounds of food per day; it wouldn't take long for a couple of otters to deplete a small pond of fish. I would look for trails coming from the river to the pond. But there is more information I would want to know.
1. You say that "All the fish have disappeared." Does this include the fish that were "already in it"? How does he know that? Has he seined the pond?
2. Are the "hybrids" the striped bass/white bass cross? If so, they are a schooling type of open water fish. So should be relatively easy targets, for otters, in a small pond.
3. Do you have cormorants around there? They are a significant fish predator around here, especially in small ponds.
4. How often does someone view what is going on around the pond? A couple of time a day? Once a week or month? Some folks can look without seeing!

Of course it could be "Aliens from outer space". wink

LT's suspended theory may hold some water! HA

These hybrids are bluegills.

No cormorants.

I think these fish may be in deep water too.

I really think that they are all huddled up for warmth and waiting for this global warming thing to occur. It's July and it's 62 degrees.
