Coon can be caught on just about anything in reality if on target and it has a smell. However the best coon bait is one that is highly target selective in nuisance work. So as to have minimal attraction to domestic or feral cats and dogs. Most fish related products especially pellet shaped fish food or fish meal products will entice alot of attention by domestic animals. Chewed up traps, set off traps etc. as a result of them attempting to get to the bait odor.Low protein content is best for suburbia trapping.
The fish pellets are primarily comprised of dehydrated fish meal and a fish oil blend. It is in essence high protein and prime conditioned cat food by visual support and odor. Some of this same pellet fish food is being sold now by a few commerical trapper supply businesses. They give it a fancy name and sold as coon bait. No work in preparing it just buy a bag and bottle it up and put a label on it.
You can also buy pure fish meal powder in bags at many farm stores as it is used in mixing with cattle feed.It is also a good added ingredient in a fur trapping coon bait however I dont recommend it for nuisance work in populated areas due to the cat and dog attraction potential. If very rural and there are no domestic or other animals close then there are no concerns.
