seems like i do everything to the extreme and my fish oil project is no exception. i am going to try to make a 55 gal drum of catfish oil, a 55 gallon drum of carp oil, one 55 gallon drum of crawfish oil and a 55 gal drum of oil that will remain a secret till i am done. here goes the project first i got 4 55 gallon drums with removable tops and one 30 gal garbage can some pvc pipe and fittings. next you have to get the fish (catfish for this one) and chunk it up. this barrel will be added to with more fish till full the rest will be filled capped and left alone. here is a picture of the venting system this is the finished system the red garbage can is full of water. i plan on having all 4 barrels set around the red barrel and venting into it. now pray for sun and heat CAN YOU SMELL WHAT THE BIGTIME IS COOKIN LOL

Where did you get the barrels? I have a heck of a time finding 55 gallon drums with lids here.
Pat, as usual, you are right....

Our co-op sells the barrels with the lids but the barrels with the 1" and 2" ports are harder to find. I can usually get em from excavateing/construction co. but they have had oil or fuel in em. Easy enough to clean. I guess you could just drill the lid if ya cant get the ones with the ports? Good luck with the oil! If you dont mind, id like to see some pics of the contents after about 6 weeks or so? Just curious...lmao...shane

i plan on having all 4 barrels set around the red barrel and venting into it. now pray for sun and heat one lil tid bit regarding your venting ... remember as the warm air/gases build in the drum and expell into your drum of water ... the opposite can and will happen with cooling (evenings/night) ... a vaccum can occur and draw water from your venting drum ... thus contaminating your drum contents

glad you guys bring up little things i don't think of.
i will see if i can get a one way ball valve to solve the venting problem.
as far as pulling oil off i can suck it out of the larger whole if need be. do you really think this this needs to be done? if not drawn off wouldn't the oil stay on top and the rancid fish settle to the bottom. as long as its not mixed wouldn't it be ok?????

just these are catfish from a cooling lake for a power plant. the water stays about 80 degrees and i have tried to eat them but they always taste like crap. they even stink something terriable when you clean them. i will continue to eat the ones i catch out of the river and just use their heads and bellies for oil

How much oil you figure to recover from each barrel? I've seen guys barely get a cup of oil off a gallon of fish. Maybe 3-4 gallons?

Monitor your efforts with guarded attention over the course of the anticipated "oil slick."
Possumskinner, ADC and LTgrey can coach you on the flavors you might glean in the settle more than most here who have experience, and have played with knowing what you can expect to siphon off of the top - plus the juices on the bottom that have useful "oil" content of their own after all of it settles at the end of the ferment - without flies.
Good luck!

Good luck with it, the one time i tried to make it there was a little oil and alot of that brownish/greyish mutter that smelled like it was conjured from the bowels of the sewage pond of [Please excuse my language... When I make Catfish oil my return is about 12 ounces to the gallon when using whole fish. I vent my barrels under ground, with a plastic hose with steel wool in the end. I auger a hole 18" deep insert the hose and add gravel than cap with dirt, very little odor with this setup and I've never had a fly/bug problem. As far as carp for oil I've found them to be a poor producer of oil, but the end product does have some value in lure/bait formulations.....B.....

' The guys who put in wells and pumps work with check valves to help the pump keep its prime you may find one talking to someone who does wells . I think they are designed for fluid. Us guys who do refrigeration and A/C also use check valves depending on what part of the refrigeration system they are installed they flow gas as well as liquid .You may find one if you know anyone who does A/C Refrigeration guys use them more. Your oil making may depend on what species and how long you are willing to let it sit . I live at the coast , when I catch bluefish a taylor blue and a little bigger mostly they have a big depsit of fat / oil right on their belly and on their back as I clean my fish to eat I cut this fat off and just throw that part into 5 gal buckets. The difference is you get much less juice a lot more oil HTH pal good luck

If you're using whole fish, the DNR might be interested in what you're doing. Its been a long time since I lived in Wisconsin but it seems there might be POSESSION limits these days. Unfortunately, some wardens don't care that you're not using the fish for eating. So, be careful what you do and who you tell.

big bob if you read all the posts you would see that im only using the catfish i catch in a big cooling lake for a coal power plant and the fish are basiclly unediable. the cats i catch in the rivers i still clean and eat im only going to use the head and belly meat from them to make oil.
as far as posession limits i will check with my local warden but i think i can get a commercial fishing license to avoid problems. thanks for the heads up

you're going to need a long straw to suck the oil off. I have used the tea jars with the spigot at the bottom once I know it is done separating just open the spigot let the juice out until only the oil is left HTH

Sure be interesting to see how it works out for you. Contrary to Jonathan's kind comments, I've only dabbled in this venture on a small scale and my findings were it's WAY better to just couch up the money for it. Maybe I should of jumped in with both feet like you, lol. Time will tell...
