Does anybody here make fish oil in bulk? Was wondering what your methods and containers were. All i found in the archives says to use a one gallon jar but i'd like to put up alot more than that.

I have five 55 gallon barrels in the back yard.It is four years old now,so it should be settled out by now.I might have to go back and crack the lid and give it a whiff to see if it good to go.

Trapper 124, in another era I produced fish oil in 55 gallon barrels. I used a by-fish...carp...that had limited market appeal. Crop it up. Stacked the barrel about half full. Sealed the lid with caulk, air tight. Stick a hose (cut off garden type) in the top and be sure it is not into the meat, and sealed this. It needs to be air tight. Run the hose into a gallon of water in a jug or bucket. This vents the gas off the oil without letting bug, flies, etc into the barrel, and lets it bubbled off the gas. My barrels had full sun exposure and were black. It should cooked off well in a about one summer...at least it did here in Arkansas, but it's hot here. Once unsealed the odor is mild, the liquid dipped off the top is a golden yellow in color and not as thick as you would expect. The slough in the bottom is a great fish emulsion and sold to flower growers and serious gardeners. Since you live near the Might Mississippi, carp should be easy to come by, and you too have hot summers. Good luck.

Crowkiller, how come you didn't stack the barrel more than half full. How much would you usually get off of one barrel? We have a comercial fishing liscense and net the Mississippi for catfish. However, we catch a lot of carp as well and just throw them back. Be nice to have a use for them, i could fill up several barrels in a short time.

Trapper 124, I filled them only half full to let a lot of gas form on the empty air space. Be sure to include the heads, lots of oil there. You could most likely fill them 3/4 full with good results. Just don't know for sure. Half full, you will likely get about five to six gallons of good clean fish oil, and ten gallons of fish emlusion, the rest is lost in the cooking off. I suppose it comes down to how much fat (oil) is in the fish. Females with eggs seem to have more...don't have numbers.
