When adjusting the pan (as far as the dog, not tension), should the dog be seated completely (bottomed out) in that notch? I've got some traps I plan to use for coyote, bobcat and beaver and right now when the pan is level the dog is a fraction of a fraction of an inch from firing and no where close to bottomed out in that notch (which I would assume allows for more pan "travel" before firing). In the current setting there would be no pan travel whatsoever. Is that preferred?

If you have very short pan travel, make sure you have enough pan tension. I go with about 1/3 inch pan travel in about 1-1 1/2 lbs on land traps.

The closer the dog is to the edge of the pan notch the less movement that is required to fire the trap.

Like water in my boots said The closer the dog is to the edge of the pan notch the less movement that is required to fire the trap.

That is why I use a night latch on mine . Go to the archives and search it out in the land trapping section .

So less pan travel is preferred, right? Thanks for the replies.

DE,
I agree with Water, great example. That was my assumption, but I have no experience and needed a second opinion since I didn't necessarily trust mine. I assumed it would be similar to night latching, too, but without the added notch.
All,
What's the easiest way to test pan tension? I've seen one of those tools to do it, do they work? Other suggestions? Thanks.

Object of know weight place on set trap pan. Trap fires, pan tension is less that what the weight is. Make sure the object is soft enough to not damge trap jaws.

Does travel matter if you are relying on "commitment to working the set".

I have to deal with small dogs like "poms" and "chias" running loose. STOP, I have already spoken to the owners and "cautioned" them but I just don't want the hassle of watching the little girl next door cry when they get caught so pan tension is set so they can walk on it and not trip.

So it's "No Digging", "No Catch".

Andy,
Great reference. Hadn't seen that site. I learned some stuff, despite the fact I'm not a kid. I am new to this and it worked for that, too! Thanks.

A lot of people seem to be offended or a little agitated when they are given a link to traps4kids. THe site is not only for k,ids, but beginner trappers.

That is why i put it in a link. People will more freely click it if they aren't offended first. It is an excellent reference.

It did have a lot of good information and I spent considerable time poking around on there. Their video series is really informational as well (my 10-year-old boys and I watched it together) but I just had never been to the web site.
