taco bell sauce does the same thing to old pennies, because of the vinegar. try it.

Got back into trapping a couple of years ago and had some awful looking traps. Some that looked worse than what was posted. Soaked them in vinegar for two weeks and took them to work and used the power washer on them. Could not believe how great they looked. Touched them up and replaced with new springs and were good as new.

Muratic acid is quicker, but it can burn you pretty bad, and the fumes can also eat your sack lunch...

vinegar is safer... will vinegar take the zink off trap chain??

Absolutely, but it takes a lot longer....and costs much more.

Leave the traps in Vinegar for one to two weeks,and all the rust will be removed.

vinegar will take the skunk smell off a trap also. i put a little peroxide and baking soda in it too.

vinegar also removes formula one, for those that don't like formula one.

It will take speed dip off. If you want to get creative, you can use a battery charger and electrolysis to remove rust as well.
