I don't draw quite as well as KYBOY but I've seen rods made this way, with a nut welded to the side a ways down the rod so you poke the top end into the bank then put the stake in so the rod won't turn sideways or pull out. I've not tried them but wonered who all has...

I have also seen them that way ADC. With the way my creeks are I dont need them but I can see where they would be very handy. I trap close to my truck/boat/4-wheeler so the rods arnt a problem to transport. Victoria I also use the long chain method. It depends on how the creek is. If the creek isnt deep enough to drown I dont hesitate to long chain. It works well for me.

Ok, KYBOY & ADC you fellas are a wealth of knowledge. How about taking a minute to draw up a long chain diagram since I have absolutely know idea how these work, but I do have many shallow river beaver situations that up to this point have required about 20' of wire for a drowner. Thanks.

That's an excellent idea ADC. I think that would work very well for me.

Victoria and KYBOY: when you say long chain set up, you're not trying to drown them right; just give them a lot of chain to reduce fighting?

I sure appreciate all the replies, especially that you've taken the time to draw me a picture. It sure makes it easier to understand.

Josh

The long chain method is just that a long trap chain 8-10' long staked right at the bank so the beaver can go in and out of the water at will and thus he feels more comfortable and doesn't fight the trap as hard. It does not drown them rather it holds them alive. Dale Billingsley has a beaver video centered around this method, it works very well for him.

I suppose I could just use a long drowner cable with a stop on the end to serve the same purpose? No weight on the end.
So as long as they have freedom to move about on a 8-10' radius they won't want to twist out?

Dale uses cable in his video as well Number17. I personally don't have a big enough population of beavers to form the experiance needed to feel comfortable giving advice as far as what will and will not work. (based on my personal experiance that is)

i use a 6'-10' chain attached to the trap when I long chain a beaver. I always make sure the area is relatively free of things for the beaver to tangle in. When drowning beaver I set shallow, when I long chain I usually set deep for a hind foot catch. Ive caught plenty buy the front feet and held them alive but I like the back foot better for it. Heres a couple of pics of beaver I long chained.
