I just made up a dozen drowner cables for beaver trapping. Had some 5/32 cable so I used it. Made them from about six to about ten feet long with most of them right around eight foot.

Crimped a loop on each end with an aluminum ferrule after sliding a drowner lock on. Made sure the loop on the bank end was a good fit for a 1/2" rebar stake.

How long do you guys normally make yours? Is there one length that works in most situations or do you vary?

Do you shut both ends like I did or leave one end open and close it with cable u-bolts on site?

How do you attach the drowner locks to the trap chains? I bought some quick links but don't like how shiny they are. Will trapper's wire suffice?

How do you secure cables at the bank...rebar stake if you can get it in solid or just wire it off to a root or something?

Will wiring off to a concrete block or burlap bag filled with rocks in the deep end do O.K.?

I guess you can tell by all the questions that this will be my first experience with drowning set-ups. Thanks in advance for any advice offered.

Eh...wot?

I make mine from 6 to 12 feet long and keep a few of each on hand. You never know when you will need a shorter or longer one.

hi Lug
I make mine out of 1/8th 7-19 I use a loc made of 1/4 inch 2 inch angle iron.bottom end has a adjustable loop top end has a cam loc set up to make it adjustableon the top end .they work pretty slick. for attaching to the trap i use a regual HD S hook. for stakeing i like to use a Pogo on both ends if possable. if not i'll use a concrete block on the bottom end. What few I still use are adjustable. I attach to my trap with a quick link or split ring. I stake to the bank with a t-bat stake or a cable stake. I use 1/8th mostly and have a few 3/16th that work real well.
