What does a weasel fetch these days and what other uses do they go for? Picked up a dozen boards last night to build some boxes today.

Has anyone experimented with how high entrance hole can be in plastic jug or box that larger ermine can still enter? And maybe prevent/limit shrews. Do ermine enter wood enclosures more readily that plastic?

Unfortunately,The deer mice seem to get up very easy. However it is much more rare than a bait box because it is basically above their radar. Even at 16 " or so they get caught, which is about max that I want the ermine to have to climb. My recollection is that the shrews are much less of a problem. The plus side is that rodent crap can't contaminate the bait.A pair of binoculars and the ribbon help you see when you caught a mouse or had triggering event.
When using the yellow pan traps, the bait is impaled on nail just above the trap. The pan is viewed as a stepping stone.
I solder #2 aberdeen fish hook to traps with the standard brass triggers. The bait is impaled directly and you will have good instant kills. Grind off the hook barb or buy barbless hooks. One careless move and it could be a emergency trip to the DR.

Here I go attempting to do a few seperate posts showing verticle trap houses.Pic 2 is with the L shaped front and roof panel removed. these boxes are made from 3/8 cedar fence boards. They are very light and hold well in deep snow with about a 3' 2x2

This is a PVC 5"x5" tree box 12" long with a cedar cleated hood with a bait wire. The notch aids in showing killbar status.

See open lid with bait wire!

Upnorth et all:

This is the same material 16" long with the same roof. I used cuts from the horizontal slot areas on the fence post for ermine entry. This is a freestanding setup that can be pushed into the snow deep enough to hold it up.New snow, no problem, just raise it up!

Skunk

I believe I see the most activity just prior, and during the early hours of a snow fall.

Nope, them's squirrels it sounds like. If all four prints are close together, then they're squirrels, if they are in twos, equally spaced, then they're weasels. Weasels put their back feet in the tracks that their front feet made, I think.

Sounds to me like probably squirrel. But see if you can find fresh tracks, squirrel tracks you can see the shape of the foot in the snow, but weasel tracks are just two marks in the snow, no details.
