Are you talking about bait boxes like the ones featured in this thread? In my experience only about 1 in 30 gets hit in the head. These are usually small females on their way out! Most ermine are slammed behind the front legs.Damaged skin and bleeding at the strike zone is rare.

Well lets check some that are going through the auction to see if there is mininual damage. That is my concern because I see all these mid section catches.
A small bait wired on the yellow pan or the old pans create this skull hit.
We are all in this together so just trying to get the best results to the market, with the best economic return.

How everyone do lately? Had another good day today with 11 again. Three were females. Will show pics later as am having issues loading pics off my camera.

Also got checked by the warden. He had seen my tracks and looked at a couple boxes to see what I was up to. I knew someone had looked at them but didn't know it was a CO. They both had weasels then on the next stop he come up behind me. Just wanted to see how I was doing and if my traps were tagged.Went down with me to check that one an had another. While we shortly shot the breeze in the crisp air, we watched a hawk come down after another weasel just a couple hundred feet away. Don't think the hawk fared as well as I did. The weasel jumped down a little hole just in time. I'm guessing it's a good chance I may not ever see that again.

Yea and I even have 2 witnesses as to the hawk an weasel a buddy and the CO. Too bad camera was turned off in my pocket. Stuff like that happens so fast by the time you see it it's over.

Also got my biggest today. I don't really know what is considered big but guessing frozen an scrunched up he's prolly 10-11 w/o the tail.

grizz, that sounds like a pretty big one. one of the biggest i caught this year was eaten by a mink. everything from the front shoulders back was gone. the mink tracks were exceptionally big, and he dragged the box about 5 feet til it hung up in the cattails, and feasted there. with this deeper snow, are you finding any culverts, or just setting more edges of cover.

Still finding culverts but mostly bigger ones like this one(where I got the bigger one)

Slide down bout 6 feet an set the box safe under the culvert.

Some smaller ones that are shallow and the plow scrapes the top off for me. Then the rest are just edges or other natural funnels.

Here is the days take.

Here is the bigger one. Looking now prolly isn't as big as I thought. No tape measure so used box as reference in pic and that box is 14 3/4 overall length.

If you want consistent skull hits, the best method I know is the old verticle set! Photo, (bait hood removed)

Due to some anti's picking up fuel for their fire, further discussions should be by PM to me, about weasel dispatch.

This all revolves around what the weasel grader has be talking with me. Red lines across their bodies are blemishes in their leather and that is what is graded, leather.

That is a good pic of a head strike, but it is probably against exposed bait set regulations in most states. White spray paint touch-up gets around that.

I saw some tracks that resembled rabbits with all four toes really close but the print was about only the size of a quarter and there are some tunnels. It is by some nice pine trees and some brush piles with quite a bit of hay looking weeds on the edge of a field at the edge of town. Are these weasel tracks or something else? The tunnels were in the brush piles. Are these weasel tracks and weasel tunnels. Or some other tracks and mouse tunnels?
Thanx

Out of curiousity, how many weasels occupy or live in an area? Can you over trap the population and if so when is the time to say "pull the boxes?" I have a nice marsh with lots of mink and rats and am really thinking about throwing down some boxes tomorrow. The other weasel threads were getting too big and hard to follow up on answers.
Thanks,
Jeff

grizz,,,very nice pics. that still looks like a pretty big weasel to me. just curious,,,was that big box culvert open on the other end, or buried. this snow and these temps are getting ridiculous.

skunk24,,,that mink wouldve been easy to take, but not really worth it to me this late in the season here.

That particular culvert was open on the other end but not enough for me to slide down through. Some of them are plugged tight but will find a hole where they are tunneling back under the snow. In fact with all this snow the culverts are plugged tight on both ends I usually havn't been finding sign until I shovel down and stick my head or crawl into the culvert.
