I got the castors from one beaver. I plan on making lure and i think its glycerin that i am supposed to add to it...to preserve it right? if it is how much do i need to add to them?

glycerin wont preserve the castor but will keep it from frezzing.
i made a homemade beaver lure one time by just fine chopping some castors and filling the jar with glycerin.

Cotton is correct, glycerin is not a presertive,

Blackie's Stop It is good stuff for meat. However, castor won't taint, and needs no presertive(s). If you don't get all the meat off the castor, the meat will taint, but not the castor.

Is sodium benzoate a help with castor, or is glycerine adequate by itself? Would 4 oz. glycerine to a lb. of beaver be enough to stop mold and keep the castor workable if ground?

just add enough glycerine to make it a paste. that is what it is intended to do in lure making

I agree with 45/70. While castor wont taint it will gradually change in odor over time. However that doesnt necesarily hurt anything I dont believe. Paul or ASA......What do you think?

Glycerine won't stop the mold and neither will sodium benzoate.

45/70... Vodka... if not, what will? How about if I just kept it frozen when mixed with glycerine. I've never played with castor much...

Sodium Benzoate is a preservative... not needed for castor

Glycerine is a mild preservative at best.... makes a good medium for mixing with castor.

Vodka will prevent mold on whole and ground castor. It doesn't hurt to add a bit to a mixture of glycerine and castor. This will inhibit mold, plus will give the odor of the castor more "lift".

Good information here! It's fun to make your own castor lure, and even better to actually catch something with it. I still like using Paul's Backbreaker, that stuff is magic. Backbreaker works so well for me I like to call it "nutcracker". LOL.

I add a Capful of Pepermint Schnopps to some of my Beaver Lure recipe's Have for 20+ years... Only enough Glycerin to make it a paste...

Other Oils like a few drops of Birch Oil or Popple Bud Oil are fun to add... just write down the ingredients on each batch...

Fun to experiment!

Mold Preventative:

Potassium Metabisulfite. Available at wine making stores. Used to keep wine from changing over.

Doesn't take much in a gallon of meat. Use with Sodium Benzoate.

I don't buy the camdon (sp?) pills. They are another form of PM above, cost more, and require a greater quanity. Actually, some of the wine stores are no longer stocking camdon.

Another method:
If you keep bait UNDER liquid it won't mold. Mold requires oxygen, and the liquid blocks oxygen.

There are some other things that other trappers use, maybe they'll chime in here with something else.

Adios,
45/70,
