I have a creek running through a middle of a swamp with tall grass. And I find I catch more weasels along the woodline near the swamp. When I set out by the creek in the tall grass all I ever caught was mice. Might be because mink travel the creek which would push off weasels.

You could either leave your traps for a few more days or maybe just experiment and move a few to a new location. Sometimes new areas you'll catch the less trap shy ones and once their caught move and do it again. The more wearier ones can take a little longer to get.

And remember keep your bait freshened. That new sign can show up anytime.

In this cold up here everything was pretty much holed up so if your getting sign keep your bait as fresh as you can there going to want an easy meal.

You'll get them.

Was it chilly out there for ya? I went out about mid morning brought me back a rabbit. Other than that pretty dead out there.

Next week I might put some new weasel traps out. Been working on a new idea.

That is the usual ratio of weasels for a good hardwood-swamp habit to support in a weasel population in a Great lake forest biome. Seems to me there was a male and female in your pics. They are moving with snow cover so you may pick up some more if there is good connecting forest cover to that 20 acres.

Caught this one today. I had the box in a culvert and had to slide in there headfirst cause of the snow. There were lots of tracks in the culvert and around the box. The box had been there for 2 weeks and had no action. I was actually going to pull it today if there was nothing in it. I reset it and set another in the culvert right next to it.

Seems like if I check the boxes everyday, I usually have empty boxes. If I wait about 3 days between checks, there is more activity. Also, my Moose River lure came in today so I rebaited/lured everything real good. Think I'll wait a couple days to check boxes again-when it warms up a little. (It was freakin -40 this morn. and supposed to be at least that tom!)

Good job Qball

Picking up two at a time is not bad. I have several times pulled 4-5 out of the same culvert before but I usually pull them after that. Other ones will move back in.

Checking your traps daily or every 3 days is more preference. I like to keep mine checked often. If you got a mouse in the trap the first day your sitting empty with no chance of catching a weasel or if you do catch a weasel other critters could damage it.

In warmer weather like we experience in the fall a Weasel will spoil if not frozen. Leaving a Weasel for 3 days is not a very good option. They are also way more active and there would be a good chance you would miss catches leaving a trap plugged for that long. You will also experience more rodent damage in the fall with warmer weather.

In this bitter cold there is nothing wrong with running a line every 3 days. In fact it is way more efficent because of far less Weasel activity in the cold.

By far the best time to trap Weasels in MN is between Nov 15 and Dec 15. Perhaps give or take a couple days depending on where you live in the State. I was running near 50% catch rate in late November when I started. Some days I brought home 7-8 weasels every day. The same line was producing 2-3 a day by the end of December and now in the bitter cold I been finding 1 every two checks.

Do not get frustrated ! Take what you learned this Winter and spend the summer scouting locations , and building a couple more boxes.
