when setting boxes out (not in a tube) where do you like to set then in a brush pile or out next to it in the grass or out in the open...?

I look for an item that sticks out. Maybe a burnt stump on a weedy fence line or similar and set next to it. If I was setting boxes in a small overgrown patch with good cover again I would look for an item that stood out. In brush piles I set on the perimeter and if there was a protected area under a canopy of brush I would favor it.

While brush piles do produce Weasels it seems like more often then not they are home to small females. Perhaps kits that stayed where they were born. These areas are often used as nesting area,s , kind of a nursery of sorts and lately I have been avoiding them.

I've got some liver , anise & glycerine for weasel bait. How much glycerine am I adding to the liver to keep it from freezing? I have about 50 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" pieces cut?

Few things I have found help this weekend, the littel packets of salt you get at resturants are perfect for salting your bait to prevent freezing, and the little plastic cups baby food comes in are great for putting bait in. Fill with liver and just take the lid off and drop it in the box.

As promised a few pics of everyones hard work.
And a few what not to do items.
This is what happens when weasels are not immediately skinned. their gut digestive juices are very causic to the hide.

Jackpine salvage missed getting pics of your weasels going through, but the grader did notice them if you group was 150+, only a couple of buyers had more,

forgot to get what a 1000 weasels looks like in a pile.
One lot in the auction.

Well it'll be six less going to market. A dang mouse got in the shed an took care of that many. Wished I had a live weasel around, wouldn't even try an trap him.

Griz when I have visited remote trappers cabins what they did there to stop mouse problems was to put the small skinned stuff weasels, squirrels and martin in steel bread boxes once dried. There was always enough air movement they did not go moldy. For bigger things they used old military steel foot lockers and put 1/4 hardware cloth on the vent holes.

But the moral of the story.."what goes round comes round". Guess those mice finally got revenge on those mouse killer weasels.
So is a 5 gallon mouse swimming pool being installed in your shed?

Right now the cats in there. I had to borrow my nieghbors as I don't like cats cept for yote bait, guess I can tolerate one for now. I didn't think I had any in there as they never touched my other furs. The cat proved me wrong an got 3 yesterday. He don't eat them just lays them by the door. The swim pool might freeze as it isn't always above freezing in there.

A good portion of my Weasel catch from this winter. Donated to the MN Tanned Fur Project to help promote our sport.

Guys - Are females typically larger than males? I got my first female this weekend and it was half again as big as the previous males I caught.

With ermine females are smaller than males.
With Longtail weasels the females are the same size or slightly larger than male ermine or shorttailed weasels.
Young of the year can be an inch smaller than adults in both species.
There are charactistic with the skulls to tell the two apart, sorry no pics yet.
2-poor that looks like there was some 1000 culverts shovelled out with a catch like that, good job.

Is there anyone from Illinois that catches weasels. The DNR says there here but I have yet to encounter one.
