Somebody wanted to know about weasel trapping in big timber. The following all pertains if you have a lot of public land to trap. I set on tracks. If I'm in a new area I use my pickup or snowmobile. You can trap off of Highways, county roads, logging roads, or go across acountry. When I see a likely location, I walk in and check for tracks. If I see one set of tracks, I set. I have made many false walks. As you learn more and more country, you will know where weasels travel and can set there every year. There are acres and acres of timber and brushland with very few or no weasels . I look for points of timber or brush, timber edges, etc. When trapping this way, a good lure plays a big part.
You are not putting the weasel as close as a culvert to your set. They might be traveling 30 to 50 feet away. Fun to back track and see how they changed their path of travel to go to your set.
I know that for many of you weasel trappers, your public land is that culvert. I see where trappers of other animals spend many summer days getting permission from landowners to trap. Maybe that would work for weasels. I know some landowners are hard to find, but usually are around their property in the summer or during hunting seasons. You can explain your set for weasels is very pet safe. Just a thought I had.
Weasels are like trapping any animal. You get the basics then go out and work at it. You can have fun whether you get 2 or 200.
Hope to see some of you in Isle. I heard from 2poor that Grub forgot to feed his dog team, so he can't make it.
