Somebody asked if there was any use for shrews, Maybe a biology teacher might have a use for them, either at a high school or a college. Or maybe an environmental learning center would be interested. Sometimes they can use some of those accidental catches like flying squirrels, shrews, voles, or whatever.

somebody asked about a vinyl box. I wonder if that is made from the same stuff that that Quiet Eddie used for coniboxes a few years ago when he used to come to the Minnesota convention? They were collapsible and you could carry quite a few of them it looked like.

The question was asked about washing. Just wash them, finger rub them dry, skin and stretch onto the board.
The reason is that weasels taint their bellies very fast, even faster if trap damage anywhere in the digestion system. When the grader come upon one of these washed weasels they gently blow inside and the fur pattern is different than when they started so the recognize this and do not down grade you.
The tainted skin on the sides is obvous and over they go off the 1 st pile.
That clear skin of theirs tells a lot of thing awfully fast.
When you have a pile of fur to skin; the best rule of thumb is to always due the weasels first, their body size thaws fastest and skin damage is the fastest.

Another question was when do you quite trapping them. The white sinnged hair shows to the trained eye. Also the skin when dried gets boardy much like a racoon does but in miniture scale. pics later.

Looks like we gettin more of that white stuff. Not so much round here maybe 3" total. But with the winds that are expected I'm guessing the shovel may get a work out. I can see where you with more snow could be sick of it.

Has anybody ever tried painting or speed dipping traps white for weasels? How does it work?

We have flooding and freezing and thawing here too. Formerly dry culverts are now iced in. I may move them into the brush where I saw sign on higher ground and use a skunk or fisher lure besides my weasel lure to see what happens.

A well known Saskatchewan trapper spray paints his victor, metal pans type white, including the meat . He places them on 3-4 foot lathes and sets them in the snow drifts up-right, one foot above the snow bank. He has even devised a rool down white cloth that comes down after the trap is fired, so the magpies don't damage it. Clothes pins in the tall shrubs marks the spots he traps at.

So next time you are travelling through Sask and see white clothes pins hanging in trees, it's not that they have taken away clothes line from Baba-baba, you are 100 miles close to this lure maker/trappers home town.

Being a rookie at this weasel game, I am just trying to figure a few things out. Never thought about the traps but did wonder if painting the front of the box white would make the hole stand out more. The hole would appear black, maybe more inviting?

Got 3 more today and in the same boxes that I got them in 2 days ago.

That makes for nine in the last 5 days out of a dozen boxes (I don't think thats too bad) I did pull 7 but set 2 out in new places. Kinda lost confidance in them spots after ten days besides I found some new spots to try tommorrow. As you can see the front of my boxes are brown would it make a diff to paint white an make the hole stick out more?

I had a ermine so completely eaten that the only thing in the box was white fur and two ermine feet. Another weasel or shrew with sharp Teeth and a bloated belly?

I had the same experience this year and set a new box on top of the drum ice and caught another, 1 week later!

Unfortunately I'm crying uncle.

Too much snow and ice, not enough time, lol. Just going to keep a couple boxes around home and pick up one or two a week.

Haven't seen snow like this in years...

You are a Grubstake follower !

I will never surrender ! At least not before a hundred and I see little chance of that happening in this snow.
