I get many PM's from young trappers wanting to know the easiest way to snare a coyote, fox, and/or 'coon.
Go-unders or dig outs under fences are one of the easiest ways to catch all three.

I personally like the bottom of the snare on or just above the ground. Of course with different types of fences and different size holes, comes different ways of setting these up....and after a while you just get a feel for it.

Unlike many trappers, I pesonally like to blend in my snares with some native vegatation. I have tried many types of locks and cable but have settled on 1x19-5/64th with a Gregerson, Slim or Cam lock as my favorites.

Yeah, I do. I run several hundred snares in a winter but, also sell many to trappers across the U.S. and Canada.

I buy my "crucible" cable in the 1/16th and 5/64th size from O'Gorman's in Montana and all my snare parts, (except Gregerson locks)from Sterling Fur Co. , right here in Ohio. Then I just decide what kind of snares I am going to make and sit down and make a few dozen or so, a day. Next day a few more dozen and so on. I make all my snares, including mink snares. They are easy to make, once you know how.
I start snaring heavy right after shotgun season for deer is over, which will be this coming Sunday.

People, just remember, check your state's trapping regulations. In Pennsylvania, this would be an illegal set due to entanglement regulations. Too bad, I have a bunch of fences that would be perfect for this set. I drool every time I walk past one.

I like the snare your using. I used to even bury the bottom of the loop slightly. the animal will pick up the snare with its back when it goes through. but i had some coyotes kinda wize to the crawl-unders at the time.

LT GREY .If you put the snare touching the ground won't the yote or fox knock the snare with it's feet when they go under the fence. When I have watched dogs go under a fence they seem to stick their feet through then their nose and squirm the rest of their body on through.I normally keep the bottom of the snare up about 2" to get the nose in the snare rather than the feet hitting first. Not disagreeing just asking for your opinion or thoughts .

Both can be correct.
Each situation differs and it depends on the hole and then the loop size, as they have to match. Not every hole will have a 14" loop in it...to do so will miss a lot of fox and 'coons, which in this area, are worth more money. Are we just interested in only coyotes? I'm not...unless it's on a spring or summer damage complaint. In fur trapping, I want every furbearer that comes through...OK, maybe not 'possums! laugh

OK bottom of the snare cable/loop...on the ground or up? I have done it both ways....I personally like it up an inch or so, with the "dry leaves blown in" look which partially covers the bottom....Also depends on the angle of the hole and how fast the animal "hits it".

Some coyotes will see the cable and stall out, which in that case...on the ground, leaf covered, large loop, is my favorite. I won't miss many coyotes with that, although some yeralings in peticular, will be flank caught. A gamble either way! wink

Thanks for your question, Spur. LT

Should mention that you NEVER want a snare loop touching the ground during WET-FREEZING conditions..for obvious reasons!

Here is a picture of the type fence snare I use here in Texas. It is very short and simply ties to the bottom wire of a net wire fence. This type fence is used for sheep and goats here and also for High fence Exotic game ranches.

Wild Ed, so in that setup you aren't even staking the snare, just clipping it to the fence wire?

I use an S hook to the fence wire or just loop the end of the snare around the fence wire, then clip the snare in place with two bobby pins.

Here is a picture of one of our fellow trappers fence snares. This is by Ricky Cox. It is just a little different from the one I use.

It seems like they would tear the fence up?

Works like a charm if the wire is strung tight. I have caught tons of stuff that way through the years and I know others that do the same. Use whatever works for you but I can put out a lot more of these in a day than any other way.
