We never stop trapping here in CA. Just slow down a bit in the "winter". I'm starting a school on Monday, and should take 50-100 gophers and 5 or 6 moles off one particular playing field. That field is just riddled with them. It's been 75-80 degrees here the last couple of days.

The ground here in Iowa is frosty in the mornings but mole trapping can still be done. I have in the past put some straw over the top of my sets to keep them working in freezing conditions. After the harvest is done, about two more weeks,(less if it doesn't rain anymore) i will be hitting the gophers hard. the fall is when i really get ahead of the gophers here. I trap untill the ground is covered with snow or to frozen to dig. I have, about three years ago, caught several hundred gophers in mid February during a thaw.

I set a house last Friday. Ground will be solid when I go to dig them up. This was a friend, not a paying deal... But I used 4 of Steve's traps. 4 OOS and 2 spear traps. Good variety and should see how one workes next to the other.

Hi All
New member, I trap on a part time basis for moles in Portland. Just started my business in Sept. and am doing ok. My calls which are all coming from Craiglist stopped two weeks ago. Steve I purchased some of your gopher traps because I nailed one by accident last month and want to be ready next time. Most of my kills are Townsend moles, do you recommend the larger mole trap for them. Normally I use the Out of Site trap but I have second thoughts when children are in the area, for that reason I like your traps.
Last Sept. at one site the customer assured me that his children would not be allowed outside the house when my traps were engaged at hls property. Normally I leave the traps two days before checking, especially when his property was 30 minutes away. A little voice said go check it the next morning after setting. When I arrived at 9am in the morning a two year old was out in the front yard in the middle of my three trap settings. I knocked on the door for 2 or 3 minutes and finally found the mother, who said he wasn't suppose to be outside. I nearly crapped my drawers, pulled the traps and gave her the check back.
I love this job and hope I can glean information out of this board. I am 65 and call my service Grandpa's Mole Service been trapping moles for 30 years, usually just for friends. In the past I have owned and managed Funeral Homes and Cemeteries and am a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer, so if you guys need to embalm any of these little critters give me a call.

Jerry, honestly, I don't think either my standard size or my large size mole trap are going to be big enough to be effective on Townsend's moles. We don't have them here, so I have zero experience, but if the traps are too small for the tunnels, the moles are going to tend to dig around the traps rather than come through the jaws where they'll get caught. The gopher trap I make might be a better bet. We do catch moles in them on a fairly regular basis, when moles happen to come down gopher tunnels where we've set traps for gophers. But they may be too big for the tunnels so you may have to enlarge the tunnels a bit to get them to fit. I don't know exactly how big those Townsend's moles tunnels are, but I do know if you're using a tunnel trap for moles, the jaws of the trap have to be right out to the edges of the tunnel.
If you try the gophinators on some Townsend's moles, I'd like to hear feedback from you on how that works out.
