I found a sand bar on the bank of a river loaded with coyote coon and cat tracks and was wondering what would be the best way to stake it? I dont really want to use a drag but if thats the best way i might have to.
Thanks
Jake Werner

In sand and plowed fields..i use a 18 inch long (finned) super stake. Try one of those. That of get you a big hedge limb or big branch and use that as a drag.

Cross stake with a couple of disposables, use 3 or 4 if you have to. No rule saying you can only use one that im aware of, lol.

Pogos work great in sand IF you can get the driver to release the washer once it's driven in. I have problems with sand getting wedged in there and it won't release.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

heres how to fix that Gary.

what i do, is drive the washer down, then use my hammer and tap the shaft of the driver several times, in a circulat motion. gve the handles a littel twist, then, hit the bottom of the handles with your hammer in a upward motion as hard as you can, keep doing it untill the driver comes up easily.

works about 90% of the time. sometimes you just have to keep trying.

I have a place like that and buried a cinder block with a long chain. the modern methods are easier but I know an old time way.

Old timers called it a "dead man" or bury a dead man. laugh
a 2x4 about 5-6 feet long is buried as deep as you can get it with the chain fastened to it.

Here is another idea I have used.

You have to use a drowner for this, but that is easy.

I have had places that just had to have a set, but they would not hold a stake on the deep end due to the sugar sand.

What I would do is to run a stout stick as deep into the sand at drowning depth as I can. I wire the stick to an overhanging branch which keeps it from moving towards the bank.

Another idea would be to fill a bag with rocks and use that as a bottom. I have used one at the top too, but I hate doing that.

The top end is staked as per normal or if there is need, the same can be done at the top end.

The best thing for this set idea is to have the animal drown before it reaches the stick. Otherwise it may hang on to the stick for a long time, working the stick as it waits.

I would sink a couple pogos, if I was still in doubt I would attach a drag also. If there is a will there is a way.
