So I was driving down this gravel road going to this secluded spot I have been having pretty good luck at and a cop passses me with his lights a flashing. Uhmmm. I think to myself thats strange way out here. As I turn the corner to pull into this feild I see a fire truck and several sherrif cars parked there. This is my normal parking spot so I am think something bad was going on. I park and get out and then the questions start......
I have been having this one coyote set tripped every day, there have been alot of tracks all-round and digging, so I am thinking they must be digging it up or something. So I set a blind set about two feet away and comoflaged it really well.
Well this guy, who claims he seen me carrying out a couple of coyotes and watched from a hill with binoculars, decided that it was inhumane to trap so he has been going in and since he didn't know how to trip the trap do he would get on his knees pick pull the chain up and then drop it up side down till it tripped. (I guess the coyote tracks came later after he left) Well yesterday he didn't know about the special surprise I have set for the cagy coyote. and put his hand down smack dab in the middle of a bridger 4-coiled #3. Not being able to get the springs to release with one hand he chose to call the police for help.
So the cops get him out and now I explain the who what when and wheres of my activities there. Then the land owner shows up, and explains I am supposed to be there, then it turns out this fruit loop, has felonie warrents out for him, so they arrest him for that, the land owner also pressed charges for tresspassing, and the worst part part of the entire deal is the cops had to keep the trap for evidence since techniclly it caught the guy. They did tell me that I will get it back though. I did pull the rest of my traps from the area to let it cool off for a while, but the land owner told me I better be coming back.
Our local CO came by last night after the incident and congradulated me on a nice catch. Said he has been doing this for 20 years and that he couldn't stop laughing when he heard it, he said this will be the joke around the station for a long time to come.
Please note he did not have any broken bones, but his hand was very red. And make a note them pogos will hold up to anything.
Sorry this is so long but I just had to tell you all.

Hup since we are on a 24 hour check, I could have left him for another 5-6 hours and still been within the law. His warrents were in california so I will be intrested in what they are for. I would have loved to have taken photos.

Press trap tampering charges.

It is amazing that a human being can't figure out how to release a trap. I know if you don't trap their mechanics are unknown, but you'd think a fella could figure it out to escape. This guy must be something else.

I don't know, I just simply don't know. The only thing I can think of is that the trap was angled across his palm, and only of the levers was under his wrist and he couldn't get leverage. I just don't know.

Actually charles is totally nocturnal, so the yuppie wouldn't have seen him setting/checking. But now he is going to try it. Actually last year I had a problem with a yote digging up a set and I think it may have been charles who told me about the sleeper trap.

That's funny! Serves him right. Even better that he couldn't figure out how to open a trap!

Bad thing is though, now that the comedy is passed, this could be used against you and trappers. Also make sure you keep everything in order for when he files a lawsuit claiming he was permanently disabled or suffered a serious injury to his hand. He could surely find some crooked tree hugging doctor to support his complaints of injury.
To protect yourself get copies of police reports. Even pictures of where the trap was, stuff like that.

And by the way, great catch!

Talk about being caught red-handed!! Looks like they kept him for the live market so you didn't have to inject him to keep him from stinkin' up the area.

Remind me to tell you about the time I caught a homeowner's wife by the big toe in a 1.5 soft catch, when she walked out into the yard barefoot at night! ( They were suposed to be gone for another 2 days). smile

LOL. that is hilarious.
I don't think that there is ANYTHING that could look bad for Trappers there. The guy would never have been caught if he hadn't of been messing with a Trap that wasn't his.
He was Tresspassing, Tampering with a trap, AND he had felony warrants. NOT TOO SMART.
The Trap didn't break anything, which isn't a surprise to us as trappers, but may be to others. It actually would be great if they did a story on it. LOL.
I would press the Trap Tampering charge too. Put it to him with everything you can.

Thats good. You have me beat. Place I used to trap was a civil war battle ground of some sort. I had permission to trap and the land owner gave a guy with a metal detector permission to look for bullets, etc... His detector starts going hay wire and he got all excited. Bent down with his little digging tool and hit the pan. Scared the doo out of him but I didn't catch any hands like you. He left the trap alone and talked to the land owner who apologized for forgetting to tell him, lol.

We had a case in Oregon where the "do gooder" tried to spring a 330 and got caught. She ended up being a spokesperson for the antis in the last ballot measure (to ban trapping in Oregon)about how "dangerous" traps are. They made it out as if she was just innocently strolling through knee deep water and got caught by the evil trapper. Never bothered to mention she was trespassing and trying to steal the trap.

The good news was Measure 97 failed and we still trap! smile

this guy is a idiot.. guess he had to much smokin out in cali lol.. To be to stupid to realize "take a stick and hit the ground" lol.. idiot..

I wouldn't worry with the lawsuit against you, if they try something get a GOOD lawyer and it will be easily thrown out if you have all the license/permits.. that and I would try and collectsome kind of bounty.. If i remember rite isn't it a felony to bother someone traps for that reason rite there?

I have never heard of any where that it is a felony to monkey with traps.

That would just make felons out of stupid one time kids who don't know better even though they should.

O)nce you are caught twice for intentional trap theft, then I think it should be though.

I find it hard to believe that he coulnd't get himself out of the trap. Any chance this could be a publicity stunt ment to expose you to the authorities? Of course it backfired on him as I bet that he had no idea that what he was doing was illegal.

I caught my wife once. Serious. She was able to get out of the trap though.

Wonder what price scalps are bringing nowadays? smile

This is the greatest thing ever. You are the best trapper ever. You hear of folks catching diggers and trap wise animals, but how about actually "catching" a trap thief. Goes to show some animals can be smarter than humans. That is great man! Did ya get any pics of your catch? Ha Ha.
